What is Privacy of Private Life?<\/p>\n

Privacy of private life is the right of individuals to be protected from others seeing, hearing, learning and interfering with their private areas, private information and private relationships that they do not want to reveal to the outside world of their own free will. This right is guaranteed in Article 20 of the Constitution and Article 134 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).<\/p>\n

Behaviors that Violate the Privacy of Private Life<\/p>\n

According to Article 134 of the TCK, a person who violates the privacy of a person’s private life is punished with imprisonment from one to three years. In order for this crime to occur, the perpetrator must record, disclose or distribute images or sounds related to the victim’s private life without their consent.<\/p>\n

Some examples of behaviors that violate privacy include:<\/p>\n

Taking photos or videos of a person without their consent
\nListening in on or recording a person\u2019s private conversations
\nEntering a person\u2019s home or private spaces without permission
\nReading a person\u2019s private letters or emails
\nDisclosing or spreading a person\u2019s personal information<\/p>\n

Protecting Privacy<\/p>\n

There are certain precautions that can be taken to protect privacy. Some of these precautions include:<\/p>\n

Using strong passwords and being careful when sharing personal information online
\nNot installing spyware on your phone or computer
\nGetting permission from your neighbors before installing cameras in your home or private spaces
\nNot having private conversations in public
\nKeeping documents containing your personal information in a safe place<\/p>\n

Criminal Law Sanctions<\/p>\n

People who violate privacy are punished according to Article 134 of the Turkish Penal Code. This penalty may be increased depending on the nature of the crime and the extent of the damage suffered by the victim.
