What is the Atonement for Murder?
Islam considers life sacred and sees harming people’s lives as a great crime. According to Islam, murder is a very serious sin and means a great rebellion against the commands of Allah. Therefore, if a person is killed intentionally, serious religious responsibilities arise for the person who killed him. However, according to Islamic law, every crime has an atonement and compensation. So, what is the atonement for murder and under what conditions is it applied?
1. Religious Ruling on Murder
The Quran emphasizes the value of human life with the expression, “Whoever kills a person, it is as if he killed all mankind” (Surah Al-Maida, verse 32). This verse means that killing a person violates not only the life of that person, but also the safety of all humanity.
The punishment for the crime of murder is quite severe in Islam. Killing intentionally requires the person to be punished in this world. This punishment is often in the form of retribution (revenge), meaning that the person who killed may have to be killed in the same way. However, Islam has also left open the paths of repentance and atonement.
2. The Meaning and Importance of Atonement
Atonement is a religious act performed to make up for a crime or sin. In Islam, sins committed against Allah can be forgiven with sincere repentance. However, in serious crimes such as attempting to kill another person, atonement does not end with repentance alone. In addition, there are some material and spiritual obligations to make up for the crime.
3. What is the Atonement for Murder?
In Islamic law, when a person is killed, there are three basic options for the family or relatives of the deceased:
Revenge: The murderer can be killed by the relative of the person he killed. This situation depends on the discretion of the relatives of the deceased. The aim of the retribution penalty is to punish the criminal in the right way. However, in Islam, it is considered more virtuous to adopt a forgiving attitude instead of retaliation.
Diyye (Blood Price): If the killing is not punished through retaliation, then the person who killed must pay a price to the family of the deceased. This price is usually a certain amount of money and is determined by agreement with the family of the deceased. Diyye allows the person who killed to make up for his crime to some extent and constitutes a kind of material atonement.
Repentance and Turning to Allah: Although murder is a crime committed against a person, according to Islam, it is a crime committed against the commands of Allah. Therefore, the person who killed must turn to Allah and repent and feel remorse from the heart. Sincerely praying for Allah’s forgiveness and repenting brings the person closer to forgiveness in a spiritual sense.
4. Conditions and Examples
The applicability of the atonement for murder depends on certain conditions. These include whether the killing was intentional or not, and paying blood money if the victim’s relatives do not demand retaliation. In addition, in order for atonement to be accepted, the murderer must truly regret it and turn to Allah.
For example, if a person kills someone intentionally and the victim’s relatives do not demand retaliation, the murderer is obliged to pay blood money. In addition, there are spiritual obligations such as constantly fulfilling religious duties and giving alms in order for the atonement to be completed.
5. Consequences of Murder
In Islam, the consequences of murder are not only worldly but also have otherworldly (afterlife) consequences. According to Islam, killing is a great sin and forgiveness for this crime is possible only with sincere repentance and atonement. In worldly life, the options of retaliation, diyya or forgiveness are applied to ensure justice.
Murder is one of the greatest crimes in Islam. However, Islam also offers a way of compensation for every crime. The atonement for murder does not only consist of repentance; it also includes conditions such as reconciliation with the victim’s relatives, paying blood money, etc. In this process, the most important step is for the murderer to feel sincere remorse and turn to Allah.
