Factors that Shape Children’s Tendencies to Commit Crime
There are many factors that cause children to commit crimes. These factors usually interact with each other and form a complex structure. Let’s examine these factors under two main headings:
• Social Factors:
o Family Environment: Communication problems in the child’s family, violence, neglect, divorce, etc. can negatively affect the child emotionally and cause them to turn to criminal behavior.
o Socioeconomic Status: Factors such as low income, unemployment, and inadequate educational opportunities can contribute to children becoming more prone to committing crimes.
o Education: Factors such as school failure, staying away from school, and circle of friends are also among the social factors that can cause children to commit crimes.
o Environmental Influences: Factors such as the neighborhood they live in, circle of friends, and the media are also important factors that shape the child’s behavior.
• Psychological Factors:
o Personality Traits: Personality traits such as aggression, impulsivity, and lack of empathy can cause children to be prone to committing crimes.
o Mental Health Problems: Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can make it difficult for children to control their behavior.
o Developmental Characteristics: Hormonal changes and identity searches during developmental periods such as adolescence can cause children to engage in risky behaviors.
What Can Be Done to Prevent Children from Committing Crimes?
We all need to take responsibility as families, schools, society and the state to prevent children from committing crimes. Some preventive measures are as follows:
• Support for Families: Families should be supported in communicating with their children, meeting their emotional needs and creating a healthy family environment.
• Strengthening the Education System: Programs should be implemented in schools to develop children’s social and emotional skills.
• Raising Public Awareness: Awareness should be raised in society about children’s rights and protection, and efforts should be made to prevent violence and abuse against children.
• Early Intervention Programs: Early intervention programs should be developed for children at risk and these children should be provided with support before they commit crimes.
