What is Aggravated Life Imprisonment?

Aggravated life imprisonment is the most severe prison sentence given to those who commit the crime of intentional murder in certain special cases specified in the Turkish Penal Code. This sentence is applied in order to completely isolate the person from society and punish him in the most severe way.

In Which Cases is Aggravated Life Imprisonment Sentenced?

In order for an aggravated life imprisonment sentence to be given, certain special conditions specified in the Turkish Penal Code must be met. These include;

Killing with a savage feeling: The person commits the act of killing in an extremely brutal and merciless manner,
Killing by torturing: Torturing the person for a long time before killing,
Killing with the motive of honor: Killing due to a false belief or tradition accepted in society,
Killing with the motive of blood feud: Killing due to hostility between family or tribe,
Killing on duty or due to duty: Killing a public official or a person while performing his duty.

Legal Consequences of Aggravated Life Imprisonment

Individuals sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment serve life imprisonment instead of a specific term. There are limited opportunities for reduction or release in the execution of this sentence. In addition, prison conditions for these individuals may be harsher than those of other convicts.
