Dual citizenship is the situation where a person is considered a citizen of more than one state at the same time. This may occur for various reasons:
Birth: A person whose parents are citizens of different countries can automatically acquire dual citizenship by birth.
Marriage: A person can acquire the citizenship of that country by marrying a foreign national.
Investment: Some countries grant citizenship to people who invest a certain amount.
Origin: Some countries grant citizenship to people with past connections to that country.
The benefits of dual citizenship are:
Ease of Travel and Settlement: Dual citizens can travel and live in both countries using their passports.
Work Opportunities: Dual citizens can obtain a work permit in both countries.
Educational Opportunities: Dual citizens may have the opportunity to receive education in both countries.
Social Rights: Dual citizens can benefit from social rights in both countries.
However, dual citizenship also has some disadvantages:
Taxation: Dual citizens may be subject to tax in both countries.
Military service: In some countries, dual citizen men may be required to do military service.
Political Rights: Dual citizens may not have full political rights in both countries.
The right to dual citizenship is determined by each country’s own laws. Therefore, it is important for people who want to acquire dual citizenship to first examine the citizenship requirements of the relevant countries.
Dual Citizenship in Turkey
According to the Turkish Citizenship Law, Turkish citizens born before 2003 would lose their Turkish citizenship if they acquired citizenship of a foreign state. However, this situation changed with the change in the law made after 2003. Turkish citizens born after this date do not lose their Turkish citizenship if they acquire citizenship of a foreign state.
However, there are some exceptions. For example, people who have acquired Turkish citizenship after the age of 18 may lose their Turkish citizenship if they acquire citizenship of a foreign state.
